November is now also known as National Novel Writing Month. While National Novel Writing Month officially began in 1999, it has taken writing communities on social media by storm in the last few years.
One of the 100,000's in the thick of #NANoWriMo? Don't forget self-care!
1.) Take Active Breaks
If you're working on your novel after a long day at the office, you've probably been sitting quite a bit this month. Taking active breaks is a great way to stimulate new ideas and move your legs.
Take a walk at a nearby park. Jump on the treadmill. Take a bike ride. Whatever it is, be active, but also allow yourself time away from your manuscript.
Hydration is an important component of #NANoWriMo because it affects focus. Drinking water and tea is a great way to stay hydrated as you cozy up to work on your novel.
After a long and exhausting writing stint, you'll thank us for encouraging you to hydrate.
Pro tip: Put an electric kettle on your desk.
3.) Check-in with Your #NaNoWriMo Peers
Even if it feels like it, you're not alone in your creative endeavors this month. Literally, there are 100's of thousands of people participating in National Novel Writing Month.
If you're feeling stuck or frustrated, reach out to fellow participants. Share your struggles and successes - it helps to keep not only you but everyone else motivated.
4.) Embrace an Off-Day
Some days this month, you're going to write for shit.
And guess what? That's okay. A first draft is a first draft. #NaNoWriMo is not about being perfect the first time around, but about exploring an idea. This month is just the first step in a long creative process that you've begun for yourself.
Off-days are going to happen. Make peace with them, and embrace it. And remember, revision comes later on in the process!
5.) Seek out Writing Inspiration
Maybe #NaNoWriMo is going well for you, but you’re feeling a bit numb inside.
Get rejuvenated with wisdom from some of the best writers in the business. They’ll help you remember why you decided to try to write 50,000 words in a single month…
We're in the thick of #NaNoWriMo, and practicing self-care is a necessity. These 4 strategies can help keep you feeling level-headed and grounded, even if your novel is keeping you awake through the night.
